May 12, 2024 Breakfast at Motel. Lunch at Zacatlan. Dinner - Tabouli Salad with Feta
We slept in n the morning and watched the news. The Hotel/motel we stayed at in now named Sendero, but during most of its history it was Garrett’s Desert Inn. I recall staying there with my family in either the 50’s or 60’s. It is centrally located on the south side of the z Santa Fe River at the corner of Old Santa Fe Trail and Alameda.
At 7:15 we walked to the lobby for breakfast, which was packaged muffins and Hostess Danish, yogurt, and apples and oranges. I ate two apple Danish heated in the microwave; the first with a glass of orange juice and the second with a cup of a Earl Grey tea. Suzette ate a muffin with a cup of coffee.
We rested until 10:00 when we walked to the Fine Arts Museum. On the way we stopped at a small market in the plaza next to the Loretta Chapel and Suzette found a pair of colorful slippers made from Guatemalan hand woven fabric that became her Mother’s Day gift.
We continued to the Museum and were excited to see a Retrospective of Rick Dillingham’s pottery. The works in the main gallery were devoted to gay painters. I guess this is Gay Pride Month.
Also downstairs was an exhibit of four photography collections being given to the museum and upstairs there was a small exhibit on Bull Fighting, which apparently was practiced in New Mexico.
Upstairs there were also 20th Century paintings from the collection.
We really loved the collection and especially the Dillingham Retrospective except for the darker late pieces made when he was dying of AIDS in 1994.
I remember seeing Rick’s work and meeting Rick at Mudd-Carr Gallery, probably in the 1980’s because I knew Ralph Carr, who was active in the Fort Worth art scene before he moved to Santa Fe and opened the gallery on Peralta across from the entrance to Canyon Road.
I think Ralph suggested I buy one of Rick’s works and for some reason, probably financial, I did not. Now I want one.
We then walked back to the car and drove to Zacatlan Restaurant at 317 Aztec where we met T.R and Linda for brunch at 1:00.
We were impressed with creativity and quality of the food. T.R. ordered a Cesar Salad that was made from a dressed half head of romaine. I ordered a Burrata salad that was a whole burrata garnished with tomato and cantaloupe wedges on a bed of greens. Linda ordered the most interesting dish Sopecitos with cochinillo pibil in a Hoja Santa sauce.
Suzette ordered the next most interesting dish of shredded chicken enchiladas with a green Chile sauce with small sweet chilis.
We drank beer and loved lunch as we talked for two hours until 3:00.
The good was fabulous and not terribly expensive as was our meal at 315 last night.

We drove to Stephen’s but did not find anything and then drove home arriving at 4:45.
I rested, having walked over 4000 steps, but Suzette weeded several garden areas in the front of the house. Suzette was kind enough to pick a large basket of lettuce from the garden, so at 7:30 I made a tabouli salad with the fresh lettuce, feta cheese, green cracked olives, and radish slices
Ate 8:00 we watched Denver beat the Timberwolves to bring their NBA series to 2 to 2 game tie.
We went to bed at 9:00.
Bon Appetit
