October 31, 2022 Lunch - scrambled Eggs with Beef Stick, potato, Pasilla chili, and bok Choy. Dinner - Grilled Rib Steak with PPI Squash Soufflé, and Roasted Corn, Brussels Sprouts, and Onion

I suspect most people, given the opportunity, will revert to their usual pattern of eating.  That has become my recent lunch menu, sliced beef sticks, PPI baked potato, fresh diced Pasilla chili, and onion stir fried and then with two eggs stirred in.  It is quick and filling. Today I wrapped the scrambled concoction in a flour tortilla toasted over the open flame on our gas stove.

I actually worked about 2 1/2 hours today and then worked another 2 1/2 hours with Chuck, the Zpath computer guy, to try to recover my contacts and hacked e mails to no avail.

When Suzette arrived at 4:30 I went to the bank and then walked 1/2 mile in the neighborhood at 5:15, just as the families with small children began roaming the neighborhood tricker treating.

The reason I love Halloween is t see the expressions on the faces of the little children in their costumes and painted or masked faces picking up the two pieces of candy we give to each child, no matter what age.

Here are some older kids with fancy costumes.

Every Halloween we ask a question of children over ten years old before we give candy.  This year we had three questions we rotated between, “What American President was impeached twice?, or “What is New Mexico’s State plant or flower”, or for those who miss the first two questions, “What is the New Mexico State Bird?, which everyone gets right.

Most kids are thrilled when they get the correct answer when challenged to think for a moment, although the answer often came from a family member, as many children walk with their family members or older siblings.

Willy rode over on his bike and slipped on his Sriracha chili sauce costume and helped give out candy to the kids.

By 7:20 the candy was gone and we started dinner.

Before 6:30 Suzette had removed the stalk and cut the 1/2 lb. Of Brussels sprouts in half and sliced the kernels off two ears of corn and dced 1/2 of a red onion and tossed those ingredients in olive oil and Hawaiian sea salt and baked them in a 350 degree oven for 45 minutes.

At 7:15 she started heating the grill and at 7:30 she started re-heating the PPI squash soufflé in the steam oven and put the thick salted and peppered rib steak on grill.

I poured out the last 2/3 bottle of the recently arrived De Ponte 2018 Dundee Hills Pinot Noir.

By 7:45 everything was ready and I sliced the hot off the grill steak.  What was amazing about this steak was not only that it contained the four or five sections of meat separated by fat of a proper rib steak, but that since it was a bit more than 1 1/4 inch thick it could be char broiled and the center could still be pinkish red.  It was perfect to my liking and Willy and Suzette ate it just as liberally as I did.

The roasted vegetables

We had a lovely dinner and Willy even asked if there was more wine, which made me realize he liked it.

My response to his question was, “No, that is the problem with good pinot, there is never enough.”

During dinner Suzette received the shocking news from Amy that Rick Goggans had died.  Rick was Amy’s sister’s husband and we hung out with them a lot when we all lived in Fort Worth. In the late 70’s.

Willy immediately texted Robin, Rick’s niece, the daughter of Tinker, Rick’s sister, who is now living in Albuquerque and Luke.  I reminded Willy that Rick was also his Uncle by marriage.

It made a sad ending to a lively evening.

Willy left after dinner and we watched a bit news and went to bed at 9:00.

I awakened at 1:30 and blogged this entry and watched Rachel Maddow and emptied the dishwasher and made a cup of hot chocolate with a dash of cognac and cream at 3:45.

I read a bit and then returned to bed for another 2 to 3 hour sleep.

Bon Appetit
