May 8, 2022 Mother’s Day, Breakfast - Blueberry Buckwheat Pancakes with bacon. Potluck Garden Party at Cynthia and Ricardo’s, New Recipe: Smoked Tea Deviled Eggs.
I woke up at 6:30 and watched Leicester lose to Everton, which was probably for the best because Everton needed to win to avoid relegation. Also, Leicester’s two best players were injured and unavailable.
At 8:30 I showered and soaked and dressed while Suzette was making blueberry pancakes and bacon.
At 9:00 Willy came to celebrate Mother’s Day. Willy made a fresh cup of Earl Grey tea and I took the second brew of the tea leaves. We ate outside under the gazebo. The garden was lovely with all the rose bushes and Columbines and sage blooming. After breakfast we examined the fruit trees that are bearing fruit this year. Then Willy and I watched a bit of Man City v. Newcastle until 10:00 when he left to drive to Creston, Colorado to go hiking with Will and Ari.
I rested until 12:00 while Suzette made a new recipe. Yesterday she went to Lowe’s and bought a dozen eggs and hard boiled seven of them and cracked the shells and marinated them in a marinade made with 3 T. each of Lapsang souchong tea and soy and 2 tsp. of five spice seasoning and marinaded the eggs over night.
Today Suzette cut the eggs in half and mixed the yolks with mayonnaise and rice vinegar and stuffed the eggs. She garnished the eggs with sprigs of fresh thyme and dabs of Kavli salmon flavored cod fish roe. She put the eggs on a deviled egg platter and filled the Central cavity with Italian green olives. The eggs did have a smoked tea flavor that was very unusual.
We took the eggs and a bottle of Campo Viejo Spanish Cava to Cynthia and Ricardo’s at 1:00. There were lots of mostly older folks there.
We also took the two bug collecting containers for Ollie and his cousin.
It was a pot luck so there were lots of interesting food. Cynthia made BBQ‘d Chicken wings that she served with a home made Sour cream dressing. Other dishes included Tabouli and chick pea salad, big grilled asparagus wrapped with bacon, dolmas, several macaroni salads, a shaved fennel slaw, and a tomato, olive, and feta cheese salad drenched in olive oil served with slices of a heavy loaf of bread that I dipped in the olive oil dressing.
I did not go to the kitchen to check on desserts because someone brought a dozen mixed tarts from Chocolate Maven in Santa Fe. I ate a chocolate drizzled mini pecan pie and 1/2 of a lovely chocolate drizzled cherry pie, both in small 3 inch diameter tart crusts.
We left around 3:30. I had watched some of the NCAA women’s Beach volleyball finals between Florida and UCLA before we left and when we returned home I saw that USC had won the championship.
The format was new to me. Each college entered five pairs of players and the college with three winning pairs advanced.
We did not eat dinner but at 9:00 I ate some yogurt and maple syrup left from breakfast.
Suzette worked until 10:00 and I watched until 11:00.
Suzette gets the award for the most unusual new recipe of the week for her Smoked tea Deviled Eggs.
Bon Appetit
