February 5, 2022. Breakfast - Sagebrush Inn. Dinner - Winter Wine Festival Oyster and Bubbly Event

February 5, 2022. Breakfast - Sagebrush Inn. Dinner - Winter Wine Festival Oyster and Bubbly Event

Today we rested and Suzette worked until 9:30 when we walked to the main building where the cantina and restaurant are located.  We ordered breakfast in the shiny new restaurant but sat by the fireplace in the historic Inn to eat.  Suzette ate the classic, eggs, sausage, and hash brown potatoes.  I ate buttermilk pancakes with sausage.  Both dishes were hearty and well prepared.

We then drove to an ATM and got cash and went to Parsons Gallery to pay for and pick up the Valentine drawing.

It was 12:30 so we drove up to the Ski Valley for the final event of the festival, the oyster and bubbly event.  We caught the bus up to the Village and were about 45 minutes early by the time we arrived.  It was a sunny and relatively warm day, around 32 degrees, so we found comfortable chairs and sunned until 2:30 when the event began.

There was only one French champagne.  It was a 50/50% Pinot Noir and Chardonnay named Bizan and very delicious.  Thankfully it was immediately next to Joseph’s Pub, so we set our food and drink on the table next to those two booths.  Today’s food and wines were excellent; much better than yesterday’s.  Besides the fresh shucked oysters there was a table with Buffalo tenderloin tartare, a table of short rib tacos, a table with cured salmon with rice and a poke sauce, and, my favorite, a table with cucumber slices with a dollop of salmon mousse with capers.

The Buffalo tenderloin tartare and several smoked salmon canapés

The wines were also more impressive than yesterday’s.  I drank champagne until it ran through a case in an hour and then tried the Sequitur Pinot Noir, which was lovely.  Sequitur’s ownership is related and adjoins Beaux Freres vineyards. There were several other Pinots and several northern France varietal producers; a good array of wines.

Again the sun set behind the mountain at 3:30 so we left at 3:45.

Luckily the sun shone on the parking area, so we had a pleasant walk back down the hill to the mini.

Traffic was terrible going down the hill and stopped at one point to let a deer cross the roa, but we made it back to the room without incident.

Suzette walked us around Sagebrush Inn looking for a private tasting that we finally discovered was at the Snakedance Lodge st the Ski Valley, so we went to our room and rested.

Later we watched our favorite shows, Father Brown and a re-run of Death in Paradise and went to bed.  I ate the ham sandwich I made for the trip and drank a Stella Artois beer for a dinner snack during the shows.

Today’s event was a good ending to the Festival, which was highlighted by Greg’s excellent choices of caterers and catered food.

Bon Appetit
