This was an interesting day in several respects. There was huge positive market movements, we saw a lot of interesting art, and we ate dinner prepared by one of my favorite restaurants in Taos, Mondo
Italiano.
We woke up and worked a bit. Then I showered and shaved and dressed for the trip to Taos, which meant blue jeans, a button down shirt, and shoes, instead of shorts, a polo shirt, and flip flops.
We packed lots of food, pita chips, chicken salad, chocolate covered almonds, a bottle of Gruner Vitlander and a bottle of Trader Joe’s Anderson Valley Pinot Noir and the bottle of Decourtet cognac, and bread and cheese.
The four major big tech stocks that I own reported earnings last night and three of the four moved up rapidly. This morning I discovered that the upheaval in the prices of Amazon, up over $100/share, Facebook, up approximately $15.00/share, and Apple, up $25.00 was real I was in heaven. The fourth was Google which had a loss in its over all business and was down about $70.00 to $1468. I saw this as an over reaction and since I had bought 5 shares at $1504 recently and wanted 100 shares I bought 50 more shares at $1472, as Google shares began to rise again from its oversold price, I hoped. As it turned out Google ended the day at $1482, so I had made $10.00 per share or $500.00.
To finish the hugeness of today’s stock market moves. I will say two things. Without having access to my entire portfolio, it appears that this was my best day ever in the market. Especially when we arrived in Taos and I was able to see some closing prices and saw that Apple ended up $40.00/share.
Then I thought about Warren Buffet, who bought 7,000,000 shares of Apple in March when the Market was rebounding at $164.00/share. Buffet’s gain today on the 7,000,000 Apple shares he owns was $280,000,000. And he owns lots of other shares of other companies.
That illustrates the great growing disparity between the haves and have nots in America. The rich are truly getting richer and the poor are suffering terribly from the impact of the pandemic on their lives.
When I woke up in the morning I ate a bowl of granola with blueberries yogurt, and milk.
Then at 10:00 Suzette made a skillet of scrambled eggs with the last of the grilled teriyaki salmon, capers, and cream cheese.
We left at 11:00 and first drove to Stephen’s Consignment in Santa Fe so Suzette could look at a large Helen Blumenschein painting of Taos Valley with Ranchos de Taos Church in the middle ground and Wheeler Peak in the background.
We then drove to a storage facility on San Mateo near St. Michael’s Dr. and Peter Johnson showed Suzette a really nice Helen Blumenschein.
We then drove to Taos with a stop at the Dairy Queen in Espanola to pick up a root beer float for a Suzette and a cup of soft ice cream coated with chocolate glaze for me.
When we arrived in a Taos we drove to Parsons Gallery on Bent Street to see Robert’s Helen Blumenschein.
We then drove to the Kachina Lodge and rested for an hour. We then ordered take out for dinner from Mondo Italiano, my favorite Italian restaurant in New Mexico. We decided to share orders of
fried calamari, lasagna Bolognese, and fried spinach with garlic for a 6:30 pick up.
We left the Kachina a bit after 5:00 and decided to take a short walk through Taos’ historic cemetery where Kit Carson and his wife and children and grand children are buried. There were other luminaries of Taos history buried there, including Governor Bent’s wife, who was Kit Carson’s wife’s sister and their children and many of the fallen in the Uprising of 1847 by the Indians and Mexicans.
What surprised us was seeing the grave of Mabel Dodge Lujan. Here is a photo.
We then drove to Lambert’s for a drink but found out that restaurants can not serve drinks without dinners.
So we drove to Mondo Italiano and waited in the cat for our order to be prepared and talked to Luke for about ½ hour catching up on his transition from NYC to Woodstock and the closing of Maha Rose and his friends in Woodstock.
When the food was delivered we drove back to the room and ate at the small table and chairs under the portal in front of our room as we watched the sun shine in a rain storm. It was quite lovely and
cool.
Calamari
We loved the food. We ate all the calamari and most of the spinach and lasagna. The calamari had a crisp light batter and was served with a marinara sauce for dipping. The portion of lasagna was huge with layers of spinach, lasagna noodles, cheese, and Bolognese meat sauce.
The spinach was wilted but suffused with pieces of fried garlic.
It was a wonderful meal than was completely filling to the point of not wanting any dessert.
We opened and enjoyed a new bottle o wine from Trader Joe’s, a private label reserve from Anderson Valley. This is the first Anderson Valley Pinot I have seen and we both thought it was a good bottle for $9.95, which is more than 2/3 less than any single vineyard Anderson Valley wines we can buy. It was clearly a blend but still a good wine for a fabulous price.
We went to bed at 8:30 after a fun day.
Bon Appetit
