April 10, 2022  Brunch of Traditional Foods on the Square in Uruapan   Dinner - Roasted Chicken (pollo asado) with Cole slaw and macaroni salad, roasted potatoes, refried beans, and handmade tortillas


Another fun day of food. We are now eating only twice a day.


We awakened, packed, and had the hotel staff load the grips into the car.


We then walked the two blocks to the church entrance where Suzette had seen the booth of wooden goods that included decorated wooden Kleenex boxes.  We decided to buy 7 boxes so Suzette could give one to each of her siblings and one for Billy and Elaine and one for Amy and Vahl.


We then walked into the entrance to the church and bought a palm frond for Linda and TR. tThere were. Lots of sellers making and selling woven palm pilgrim”s decorations.  The doors opened as we were buying the palm frond and hundreds of persons emerged carry palm fronds Kline the one we bought.  We joined the crowd and walked around the church to the main plaza where five or six restaurants had set up their food stands, just like yesterday.  We picked the first line and stood for about fifteen minutes to reach the front watching the two ladies making tortillas..  We ordered a plate of beef in its own juices and pork in red sauce plus three hand made tortillas and some lettuce and tomato and onion slices for $3.75.  I bought a tamarind licuido (tamarind pulp mixed with water and sugar) for $.75.


We found a place among the twenty or thirty tables set up in the square.










After we finished our beef and pork tacos. Suzette went to the stand she looked yesterday and ordered four blue corn tacos, two with chicken mole and refried beans and two with pipian and cheese.


Suzette also drank a glass of jaicama (hibiscus) licuido.  I ate one of the mole and bean tacos and was full after having eaten two meat tacos previously.


We finished brunch around 12:00 and walked back the 1 block to our car and drove out of Uruapan.  We stopped at the next small town and bought three avocados, since Uruapan bills itself as the avocado capital of the world.  The Uruapan avocados are incredibly creamy when ripe that is a big plus.


We drove a different route that contained better roads and a little faster.  When we reached Tizapan we tried to find a roasted chicken.  The first  place was back logged. The second place was not cooking today, but they  directed us to La Cabana. Which actually was a large restaurant located down a steep drive. It had a great grill and a bar and a lady who made fresh handmade tortillas with a full kitchen upstairs at street level.


There were lots of people eating and they did a big take out business, so we sat and waited and watched the lady making tortillas and the grill master grilling orders of chicken for about twenty minutes and drank a beer while they finished filling the other orders and finished grilling one of the half-cooked chicken for us.


We paid 225 pesos $11.25 for a whole baked chicken, roasted potatoes, refried beans, cole slaw, a red BBQ sauce, a bag of chips, six hand made tortillas, our beer, and a hot red salsa


We drove the last ten miles to the Lake house and unloaded and then ate dinner around 5:30.


Suzette filled plates with a piece of chicken, beans, Cole slaw, a roasted potato, and I peeled and sliced one of our avocados. I added a tortilla.




I opened the Concho y Toro Sauvignon Blanc and poured glasses for dinner. 


Everything tasted great, except Suzette found the white meat a little dry. My guess is that they try to kill all bacteria in Mexico rather than retain all juices as in France.  That is probably why they sauce their chickens so often. I did not see anyone ordering an un-sauced chicken except us.


The Sauvignon Blanc tasted great. I will look for it in the states as well as Concho Y Toros’ Torrontes.


While we ate Suzette was fiddling with my I Pad and her phone to try to connect my I Pad to her phone connection to the internet and she succeeded in making her phone a hot spot internet connection for my I Pad by the end of dinner.


So after dinner we retired to the dining table and watched two more episodes of The Last Kingdom and the Sunday Morning Show’s feature on the new Anthony Bourdain film, “Roadrunner”.


I drank a brandy, Penefiel Limon, creme de Cassis, and orange juice cocktail and later White Russian with brandy and Suzette finished the wine and then a sip of brandy


At 10:30 we fell into bed and slept soundly all night.


I must note again that my gut bacteria seems to be enjoying the Mexican food as much as I am.  There have been no problems with anything I have eaten so far.  That stands to reason based on the fact that I think the bacteria in question were gained from a bout of dysentery from eating a chicken that had been in the sun too long on the beach in Manzanillo on my honeymoon 45 years ago.


The bacteria seem to be enjoying their homecoming.
