January 2, 2019. Lunch – Aster Restaurant. Dinner – Al Campo Wine Bar and Restaurant

January 2, 2019. Lunch – Aster Restaurant. Dinner – Al Campo Wine Bar and Restaurant

This was our day at Chianti Foundation.  We awakened at 7:30 and turned on the TV to the business channel, CNBC, and discovered that the market was ready to blast off to new highs.  At the end of the day the Dow rose 330 points and the Nasdq and S and P hit new highs.  What a day.

I ate the rest of the vegetable and rice soup with some pieces of ham and cheddar cheese added to get some nourishment into me for the big day of walking at Chinati.

At 9:15 we drove to the coffee place for a coffee for Suzette,  Then we drove to the Post office and posted our postcards.  We then drove to Chinati Foundation for the 10:00 tour.  We went through two large buildings with 100 boxes constructed from 3/8 inch thick rolled aluminum in different configurations created by Donald Judd and then several more buildings, including the rebuilt hospital that had three spectacular large Robert Irwin prices .  We ended the morning at a downtown building with dozens of John Chaimberlain sculptures.  The abundance of works by Judd and Chaimberlain was hard to accept.  Out here in the middle of nowhere DIA bought Judd an abandoned military base and several large buildings and Judd filled the buildings with art.

At 12:00 the morning was complete and we drove to the Aster restaurant across from the Presidio County courthouse.  It served an eclectic menu.  We each ordered bowls of potato soup and slit a an antelope sausage sandwich with a bit of salad.

I enjoyed the soup but the sausage was a little tough, but edible.  After lunch we drove back to the room for dessert, a brownie and cups of port.  I grabbed three sugar pills because I had tired from all the walking in the morning.

We returned to Chinati at 1:30 for the afternoon which included even more walking which tired me out and my muscles began to weaken.  I took three sugar pills and began to feel better and was able to follow the group to the end of the tour, through the six barracks of Dan Flavin fluorescent light
installations and three or pfour other buildings.

I rested and Suzette walked back to the Highlander and fetched me.

We returned to the room and I rested until dinner at 5:30.  We decided to go to Al Campo wine bar and restaurant.. there was adish we were attracted to named Cocinmiento, which was a mixed grill of beef short rib, a smoked chicken thigh, a pork rib, a piece of pork belly, and a link of pork sausage (chorizo) in a white wine broth with a potato, a carrot, Posole, and cilantro, served with lime wedges. We asked for corn tortillas and were served four of them toasted also.  We loved the dish.  It was very flavorful and filling.  I particularly liked it because it contained lots of protein and carbs.

I felt better after dinner.  We returned home at around 6:45 and watched TV.  I drank a beer to wash down all the fat from dinner and later ate another brownie with a glass of 2010 Wellington Mohrhardt Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon that Suzette has opened.  My pee cleared and was still a bit foamy at 10:30 when I wrote this blog entry, so I am on the mend.

We watched “Green Book” and then an amazing finish to the bowl game between Indiana and Tennessee, wherein Tennessee came back from a 19 to 9 deficit to win by one point, 23 to 22, utilizing a successful on side kick with 4 minutes left in the game.

We went to bed after watching the news that President Trump had oRdered the bombing of the Baghdad airport, probably in response to the release of an incriminating email showing Trump knowingly countermanded his advisors to stop the release of military aid to Ukraine.

Bon Appetit
