March 21, 2025 Lunch - Seafood Soup for me and Swedish Meatballs, noodles, broccoli, and rice for Peter. Dinner - Duck and Red Cabbage and Chestnuts for Suzette and neighborhood cocktail party

March 21, 2025 Lunch - Seafood Soup for me and Swedish Meatballs, noodles, broccoli, and rice for Peter. Dinner - Duck and Red Cabbage and Chestnuts for Suzette and neighborhood cocktail party

We woke up at 8:00. Suzette did aerobics in the hot tub and then went to her exercise class at 9:00.

I ate tropical fruit salad, granola, and yogurt for breakfast at 9:00.

The market was up and down today and my portfolio managed a small gain by the end of the day but I did not know until after 5:00 because I worked at my desk most of the day, except for a very special lunch that I discovered was special only after I invited Peter for lunch at 11:30.

He arrived at noon and told me that tomorrow is his birthday.  How special.

I heated the leftover Swedish Meatballs, noodles, broccoli, and rice for Peter and the leftover Seafood Soup for me and toasted several slices of baguette and poured the last of the Fronsac Red Boudreaux and we enjoyed a good lunch.

Then I worked on the Complaint and affidavit for a case from 1:00 when Peter left until 5:00.

Suzette arrived around 4:00 and watched TV with a cocktail and ate the leftover roast duck with some of the side dish of red cabbage and chestnuts. At 5:00 she went to bed and napped until 6:00.

My portfolio was up slightly due to good gains by Meta, Apple, and Palantir, even though Nvda was down .7%.

At 5:30 I began preparing my dish for the Neighborhood cocktail party.

I fetched the box of 72 small quiche tartlets from the freezer and arranged them on a large cookie sheet and baked them in the oven for 14 minutes at 400 degrees to brown them.  Then I lay a small piece of Racalette cheese on the top of each quiche and woke Suzette up at 6:00 so we could get ready for the 6:30 cocktail party.

We put the tray back into the oven for a couple more minutes to melt the cheese. I had gone to the garden and picked several sprigs of tarragon and chives and we added 1/2 of a tarragon leaf or a bit of a sprig of chive to the top of each quiche. Then we covered the tray with aluminum foil and put it back into the turned off oven to keep the quiches warm.

Some of the quiches on the food table

At 6:20 I grabbed a bottle of Kirkland Pinot Grigio and Suzette carried the warm tray of mini-quiches and I carried the wine to the party at the mayor’s house.

There were lots of neighbors in attendance. I talked to Tom, who told me he and Bill and Michael have all retired from the practice of law. I became more firmly convinced that I need to retire fully from litigation.

The high point of the evening was watching UNM best Marquette in the first round of the NCAA tournament.  UNM did not fold at the end and won by 9 points. Everyone cheered.

The food was generally interesting, with many homemade warm dishes like taquitos and guacamole, egg rolls and sweet chili sauce, and chicken wings, but the desserts stole the show, especially Susie’s crepe and chocolate mousse cake (crepes smeared with chocolate mousse wrapped into a standing roulade and decorated with strawberries on the sides and gold dust on top), which was the best dish of the night among many good dishes. Susie is or was a professional baker. Many of the warm dishes including mine became less interesting after they cooled from sitting on a table next to the open French doors to the back yard.

Lovely Swedish style jelly filled cookies

Susie’s crepe and chocolate mousse cake

                                                      The bucket of chilled drinks

A Malbec from the Valle de Uco, Argentina

It was fun seeing lots of folks. Unfortunately, Tim had suffered a recent Achilles heel injury and was in a boot and on a cane, but still in his usual good spirits.

We walked back home at 8:30 and went to bed a bit after 9:00. I accumulated 2600 steps, mostly from the walk to and from the Mayor’s house.

I woke up at 11:00 to blog and drink a glass of yogurt drink to settle my stomach from the unusual mix of food. Suzette did not eat much at the cocktail party since she had eaten a wonderful dinner of roast duck thigh and red cabbage and chestnuts at 4:00 when she arrived home.

After a full day of food, friends, and work, I felt like I had fallen in a ditch, but I felt better by 11:00 when I woke up.

Bon Appetit
