November 5, 2017 Brunch – Lax and Bagels Dinner – Veal Osso Bucco, green Beans, and Bulgar

November 5, 2017 Brunch – Lax and Bagels Dinner – Veal Osso Bucco, green Beans, and Bulgar

I slept in a bit, then watched the news programs until Billy came back from their walk and Elaine came back from gardening at the Temple.

Billy went to the store to get a baguette and then set up the Lax he had bought at Trader Joe’s with the cream cheese, the whitefish and the bagels.

I made a cream cheese, sliced onion, and Lax bagel and then a cream cheese on baguette with whitefish and drank tea with it as we watched the last of the Sunday morning news programs.  The high point this week was  George Stephanoupolus’ interview with Donna Brazile, who ripped the Hillary campaign staff repeatedly.

At 11:30 we left for IKEA which is located north of Plano with the shopping list Suzette e mailed to us.

Elaine helped me shop for the items on the list, while Billy sat and read.  After paying I bought $22.40 of food; two punchrollar, a jar of summer Herring, a tube of Kallas cod roe, two chocolate bars, and a loaf of hard bread.  I left happy that I had gotten the items Suzette wanted and a few favorite food items.

We then drove bach into Dallas on Preston, which Billy told us was originally a trail to Oklahoma, which is why it goes all the way to IKEA.

While Billy and Elaine shopped at Central Market I rested in the car.  They bought veal shanks and the vegetable ingredients for Oslo Bucco.

We went home and I rested some more as they prepped dinner.  Billy and Elaine gave me an old suitcase to carry some of the larger items in.  Elaine and I were able to pack everything into the two suitcases.

It seemed like a long day because the time change off daylight savings time gave us an extra hour.

Then at 2:45 we began watching the Cowboys play Kansas City.  The Cowboys were just as well organized and efficient as TCU had been the night before.  They outplayed KC and even got an interception that broke the 298 pass without an interception streak of KC’s quarterback to win by 11points.

Billy and Elaine began cooking during the game and dinner was ready at 7:00.  Here are pictures of the food.

The Bulgar

The vegetable sauce and braised shanks cooked together to make Osso Bucco
We opened the red wine Billy bought at Trader Joe's for $8.99 and it was okay but had a slightly bitter finish, so Billy opened a bottle of H & H Chateaunuef du Pape that was clean, with no rough edges anywhere, just a delicious red wine and we served ourselves Osso Bucco,Elaine’s lovely green beans tossed in caramelized onion, and Bulgar.

Billy placed small spoons at the table so we could remove the marrow from the inside of the bones.  It was tender an delicious and I ate it with the vegetable sauce and Bulgar.

At 8:15 Billy drove me and the two suitcases of IKEA goods to the airport.

After clearing security I stopped at a wine bar and drank a glass of Dow’s 20 year old tawny port and talked to a couple from Connecticut who had taken a Viking cruise on the Rhine and the Mosel Rivers.

I then flew back to Albuquerque with a plane full of folks who had just been to the Cowboys’ game.  It was a full flight.

Suzette picked me up at the airport and we got to bed by 12:00 which was 1:00 the day before.

Bon Appetit
