July 7, 2019. Brunch – Scrambled Eggs and Cottage Fries with Bacon. Dinner – Grilled Filet Mignon, carrots, Asparagus, and white sweet potatoes

We awakened at 5:30 and dressed and Ubered to Love Field for us 7:45 flight to Albuquerque.  The plane left on time and when we landed I went to the car lot to fetch the car while Willy and Suzette dealt with the luggage.  I picked them up at the arrival area and we drove home in time to see the beginning of the Women’s World Cup  championship game between The Netherlands and USA.

We watched for a while and then Suzette started brunch, frying diced potatoes in butter and olive oil to make Cottage Fries. In a
separate skillet she fried six slices of thick smoked bacon.

When the potatoes were golden brown and the bacon fried to a crisp she broke four or five farm fresh eggs into the potatoes and scrambled the whole affair. I made fresh cups of Earl Grey tea for Willy and me and me and Suzette made her Sunday Bloody Mary with a lovage straw.

We were happy to be home.  We decided to go grocery shopping, which really meant wine and spirits and food.  We started at Total Wine where Suzette bought bottles of Scotch and a bottle of Evan Williams bourbon for mint juleps and a bottle of H and H Cotes du Rhône rose.

We then went to Trader Joe’s where were bought 14 or fifteen bottles of rose for Suzette’s Flamingo Friday rose celebrations at the Spa at the Center for Ageless Living and a bottle of Chevalier VS cognac.

We then drove to Sprouts at San Mateo and Academy that is getting a facelift.  We bought four nice filet Mignons, two pounds of lean hamburger meat, shitaki and portobello mushrooms, white sweet potatoes, green beans, Vidalia onions, and celery.  Filet Mignon is on sale this week for $12.99/lb. which is a wonderful price.  Each filet weighs about 10 oz. and is all meat.  We shared one filet for dinner so each of our five oz. dinner portions was $4.00.  We liked it better than a rib steak, wWhich at a bit more than one pound is about $2.50 to $3.00 per portion.

We returned home about 3:00 and took the wine to the basement and then napped on the couch until 4:30.

At 6:00 we started cooking.  Suzette prepped the carrots and asparagus and a sweet potato and a filet for the grill, while I sliced ½ Vidalia onion four or five cloves of garlic, and shiitake and portobello mushrooms to sauté.  I went to the garden and picked 10 sprigs of thyme.  Suzette melted butter and olive oil in a large skillet and put in the onion and mushrooms.  I added the thyme and Amontillado sherry and sautéed the mushrooms and onions and added the thyme and doused them with sherry while Suzette grilled the filet and vegetables.

I fetched a bottle of 2008 Wellington Mohrhardt Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon from the basement and opened it to let it breath and the poured glasses of it to let it breath further.

When Suzette brought the grilled vegetables and steak in she plated the plates while I sliced the steak and placed three slices of steak on rack plate.  We watched the Gold Cup final between Mexico and the US at 7:00 and at 8:00 changed the channel to the season final of Endeavour on PBS.

I opened an aged round of Brie and toasted and buttered six slices of French baguette. And we finished the meal with a few slices of Brie on slices of bread with the last of the cab.

I later finished dinner with a sip of cognac and Grand Marnier and a couple of wedges of Toblerone.

Suzette and I like filet much better than rib steak, so I will buy more.

Bon Appetit
