September 19, 2024 Lunch - A Fonte do Vino Dinner - Salad and Sandwiches at House
We woke up and said good bye to Mickey and Rebecca around noon and drove to Cambados and walked out along a walkway to a small island where a tower now stands, the remains of a Medieval castle built to guard the town against the Vikings in the 800’s. Just one small part of the castle remains. We walked out around 1:00 when the tide was starting to come back in and saw a couple dozen clam diggers bringing in their catch of clams, cockles, and razor clams.
We then walked back to the car and drove to a spot about three blocks from the restaurant and walked to A Fonte do Vino for lunch. We arrived 2:15 and our reservation was for 2:30. I sat and drank a white vermouth, while Suzette took Billy and Elaine to the Monastery Winery where Billy bought herbal liqueurs and Willy went off exploring.
We reunited at 2:45 and ordered lunch. Suzette and I ordered a Dozen oysters on the half shell with catsup and lemon wedges on the side so Suzette could make a cocktail sauce. Suzette asked for and was given a bottle of Tabasco to heighten the flavor. I also ordered Percebes or goose necked barnacles for everyone to try.
Then we ordered our main course. I ordered a Galician corn empanada stuffed with mussels, Billy ordered veal, Suzette ordered Pork skewers. Willy ordered a cod stew, and Elaine ordered a Hake stew.
My dish was the most interesting. It was a thin baked pie with a cornmeal crust with a creamy mussel filling.
The stews were mostly fish and potatoes.
After lunch at 4:00 we returned to the house and rested. I awakened at 6:30 and walked with Willy up the hill to the road which runs laterally along the hillside, a distance I judged to be about 2000 steps. With the steps in Cambados I think I walked 4000 steps today.
Also the market had a good day in response to the fed’s .50% rate cut.
It was an uncoordinated dinner. Elaine and I made a salad with lettuce, carrots, cooked green beans, cucumbers, and tomatoes. I made a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, and salt. I also sliced some thin onion rings and opened the can of bonito of the Norte. We hard boiled three eggs and added those to the salads. We buttered toasted slices of bread and Suzette, Elaine, and I had a light meal. I also ate two slices of bread with ham and cheese.
Billy sautéed a meatball and Willy heated up the leftover fish, seafood and rice dish. We opened the chilled bottle of Martin Codax Cuatro Osos, which is a dry Mencia rose’ and my favorite Martin Codax wine and, luckily, its cheapest at 7.25 Euros.
After dinner we each ate a small piece of Santiago cake, which had moistened and become more flavorful sitting on the table overnight.
Visiting Cambados made us recall how pleasant it is. The scenery is definitely better in the Pontevedra valley, but Cambados has more amenities and is more walkable. We were hard pressed to pick a favorite.
Bon Appetit
