March 1, 2018 Lunch – Bait and Hook Theater - Hamilton

March 1, 2018 Lunch – Bait and Hook   Theater - Hamilton

We started by walking across 1st to Ess-a-Bagel.  I got a multigrain with cream cheese and white fish to go.  We then walked south on 1st to the local Starbucks and got a large coffee for Suzette and a large Chai Latte for me and we sat and Suzette ate some of the white fish and I ate the rest of ½ of the bagel with cream cheese and whitefish.

We then walked for a couple of miles around the neighborhood down to south of Union Square to a Cure Consignment store that was closed.

We then walked north.  We stopped at the Smithsonian’s American Archive of Art and tried to do some research, without an luck.  Then we walked to Gramercy Park and stopped at Gramercy Antiques and looked around but did not buy anything.

It was 1:00 when we started walking back toward the apartment.  Our original destination was Momofuku at 10th and 1st Ave. but when we arrived at 231 2nd Ave. we saw a board in front of a restaurant named Bait and Hook offering $5.00 beers and $1.00 oysters that stopped us in our tracks.  We immediately changed our lunch plans from noodles to oysters, which pleased Suzette because she is not eating noodles or ant type of pasta these days.

                                                         The fish taco

                                                          The bad crab cake

We went in and immediately ordered a dozen oysters and ½ dozen clams.  The oysters were Blue
Points from the Long Island Sound and clams were little neck clams.  We also ordered fish tacos with mango salsa that were okay and crab cakes that were rather doughy and unappetizing.  So we ordered another Carlsberg beer and dozen blue point oysters.  Bravo for a meal both of us thoroughly enjoyed.

We returned to the apartment and showered and rested until 5:00 when we dressed and took a cab to the Glass House Tavern at 252 E. 47 where we each drank a Manhattan and shared a delicious order of calamari Tempura with a small salad with marinated tomato.  More interestingly, thin slices of tempura battered garlic were fried with the calamari.  I had never eaten tempura fried garlic before and loved it with the calamari.  A new recipe.  I liked Glass House Tavern a lot.

At about 6:30 we walked around the block to the Richard Rodgers Theater for a 7:00 showing of Hamilton.  Our seats were in the fourth row of the upper mezzanine with a perfect unobstructed view of the entire stage from above.  We could hear and see everything and really enjoyed the show.  I wish to thank the book club for making Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow a book club selection.  I would not have enjoyed or understood the story line without reading the biography.  Have we found a new way to teach American History?

                                            Suzette at Hamilton

It started raining during the play so when the show ended at 10:00 we walked into the Marriott Marquis hotel next door to get out of the rain.

We went to the lounge on the 8th floor and took a window seat above Times Square.  We ordered Sam Adams Cold Snap seasonal ales and an order of chicken and lemon grass pot stickers with a soy and green onion dipping sauce.

Then at 11:00 we easily found a taxi that took us back to a Rebecca’s apartment.

We are finding lots of pleasant food surprises this trip.

Tomorrow we plan to eat breakfast at Bouchon at Rockefeller Center and the go to the Met to see
some art and eat lunch.

Tomorrow night we will go to Le Cou Cou for a big meal  with Rebecca and Mickey.

Bon Appetit
