May 16, 2021 Homeward Bound. Lunch - Butter Love, Amarillo. Dinner - PPI Beef and Broccoli and Mandarin Chicken with sugar snap peas and asparagus

We left at 7:15 from Fogg State Park after a cookie and a cup of tea for me and a cup of coffee for Suzette.  We arrived in Amarillo at noon and drove to Butter Live, which had an appealing menu including many dishes baes on a biscuit.  I ordered a Green Thumb which was a biscuit sandwich with Parmesan crusted chicken, house chimichurri sauce topped with arugula. Suzette ordered the biscuit pot pie, which turned out to be a mixture of vegetables and chicken in a heavy white gravy seasoned with lots of rosemary.  Neither dish was very successfully.  I decided that what sounded like a good idea was actually not a very good culinary ides because a big biscuit is too bland and doughy to be very appealing and the preparation and execution of the dishes was lacking.  When I got a peek in the kitchen I saw why.  The kitchen was under pressure to put out the huge number of dishes ordered by the wave of noontime customers and there were no chefs, only young college students running the kitchen.

The best part of the meal was the glass of fresh squeezed orange juice I drank with my meal.

We decided to drive to an antique warehouse on the south side of Amarillo.  Unfortunately, Amarillo does not have the old wealth that Tulsa and Oklahoma City have.  Most of the stuff was cheap junk.

We left without buying anything and started our last 280 mile dash to home.  There were a series of minor issues, but none that slowed us down.  Probably the most serious were an angry odometer that made whirring sounds and the driver’s side window that ceased to work.  We had not AC so we rolled the windows down and kept driving until we reached home at 6:00.  Crossing the border into New Mexico never had felt so good as it did after this 21 days on the road.

                                                         The New Mexico afternoon sky.

We unloaded the van and showered and then decided to combine the two Chinese dishes with some snow peas and asparagus.  I was tired and had to lie down , so Suzette made rice and then sautéed the Chinese PPIs in a skillet with sugar snap peas and diced asparagus.  The resulting one dish dinner was amazingly tasty for week old leftovers, but I had little appetite.

I chilled a bottle of Cote du Provence rose and we drank a glass with dinner, but we were tired and the food was not very appealing and we did not find the wine very interesting

After dinner we watched several Masterpiece theater episodes and went to bed at 10:00, like a normal Sunday evening.

It was heaven being in our own bed again and we slept soundly, except I blogged from 3:30 to 5:00 and then slept until 7:00.

Bon Appetit
