April 9, 2025 Breakfast at Balcon de la Plaza,  drive from Salta to Cachi, Lunch - Mi Favorita.

We woke up at 7:30 and went to breakfast at 8:00 in the breakfast room. I ate a bowl of muesli with fruit salad with juice and yogurt.

When I finished my cereal I asked the attendant for an egg over easy to which I added a slice of ham and a Quince jam flavored croissant with cherry jam and a cup of black tea with milk.

We then loaded the SUV at 9:00 and drove for 4 1/2 hours over a cordillera to Cachi which looks a lot like a rural Mexican village. The road was rough in places but paved most of the way.

After crossing the summit we were in the Cordones National Park driving through mile after mile of tall saguaro like cacti named Cordones with occasional small herds of camelid guanacos.

Here are some pictures.

When we arrived at Cachi we stopped at one of the spice stores where we bought ground pimento, tomate, smoked pimento, bell pepper for $11.00.

We then walked to Restaurant Mi Favorita. The menu said that the pasta is homemade, so Suzette and I decided to share a bowl of pasta within bolognese sauce and a lettuce, tomato, and red onion salad. Instead of ground beef our bolognese sauce had a few flakes of cabrito that was not great, but the tomato sauce and fresh pasta were good.

                                                    Malbec Reserva

We ordered a good bottle of Cafayate Reserva Malbec wine that opened up in about twenty minutes into a luscious drink.

Billy ordered what Suzette and I shared two nights ago, cazuela de cabrito and a beef tamale. Elaine ordered an Italian Salad of cubed potatoes, green peas, and carrots in a mayonnaise dressing and a humita that was a vegetarian tamale filled with a soft masa filling and two empanadas.

After lunch at 3:30 we drove to Hotel Merced de Alto, which is a fancy hotel and spa built in the Spanish mission style.

It reminded me of a Spanish Parador in architectural style and amenities.

I napped from 4:30 to 5:30 when Suzette wakened me and we drove to a winery that was closed but the proprietress met us and invited us to return tomorrow to taste wine and watch the sun set.

Then we drove to the plaza and shared a beer at Oliver on the square, which is the top ranked tourist attraction in Cachi.

We also visited the church with its cordonera cactus wood ceiling and confessional and then walked through the plaza back to our SUV, stopping to buy two milk chocolate bars.  We then returned to the hotel and shared a vermouth with Bill and Elaine, as we discussed plans for tomorrow.

We went to bed at 8:30. Suzette applied hand cream to my feet that was wonderful.

We ate a few chocolate biscuits for dinner and a piece of bread with goat cheese cheese.

Bon Appetit
