December 2, 2017 Brunch – Crab Salad. Dinner –Bistronomy B2B
We went shopping this morning. Suzette dropped off a box of gifts for shipping to her mom at UPS. Then we went to Donut Mart and I bought bagels and we ate a toasted bagel with cream cheese. The we drove to Goodwill where Suzette found gloves on sale and bought 70 pairs, one pair for each member of her staff. I found a Danish thermos for $1.99.
Then we drove to Trader Joe’s where Suzette bought deodorant and 8 bought four bottles of 2016 Emma Riechter French rose’ for $4.99, a bottle of dry Riesling for $5.99, two bottles of Chateau Roudier French red from Montagne-Saint Emilion, a 2011 Graham’s late Bottled Vintage port, a bottle of VS cognac, and as we walked to the cashier a ?Bordeaux Sauvignon forv$6.99.
Then we drove to Big Lots on Menaul. Suzette shopped while I sat and read in the car.
We arrived home at 11:45 well into the second quarter of the Big 12 Championship game between TCU and Oklahoma. TCU was behind and stayed behind for the rest of the game as Oklahoma’s wide receivers ran past TCU’s defensive backs time and time again catching touchdown passes.
Crab Salad
We decided to make crab salad with the 1 ½ lb. crab I bought at Costco on Wednesday for $7.98/lb. I made a dressing by combining the juice of ½ lemon with one large finely diced shallot, ¾ cup of mayo, 1 T. of Horseradish, 3T. of catsup, and 1 T. of fresh tarragon leaves chopped. I put the sauce into the fridge to chill and congeal and then cleaned the crab by removing it shell and yellow gooey inside and gills. While I was making the sauce Suzette fetched a bottle of Gruet Blanc de Noir Champagne from the garage fridge and filled pasta bowls with torn Romaine lettuce, slices of tomato and radish’s day cubes of cucumber. I added two slices of red onion diced into small cubes and we were ready to eat. I opened the champagne and poured glasses and Suzette served the salads. We each cracked and picked all of our ½ crab onto the salad that we had drizzled with olive oil and lemon juice and the dressed each salad garnished with crab with the creamy mayonnaise dressing.
Then we took a nap. I slept until 4:00 while Suzette got up and hung pictures, because I awoke several times from the sound of nails being hammered.
We then took showers and dressed and drove to Birdland to see the Twinkle Light Parade.
We talked to Jay and Paula for a while and walked outside when the parade began. We immediately walked to the firehouse restaurant at the end of the street and walked up to the second floor outside patio and watched the parade as we drank gin and tonics. After about ½ hour we visually located Bistronomy B2B across the street and went down and stood on the street for a while and then ran across the street to the restaurant during a break in the parade.
We were able to get a window table so were able to see the parade floats from the restaurant. We each ordered a Pierre burger, which was a 1/2 burger grilled to the degree of oneness you select, served on a bun with lettuce, tomato and thin rounds of red onion plus your choice of French fries or for $2.00 more a more exotic deep fried vegetable. I chose battered green beans and Suzette chose deep fried parsnip and carrot sticks for $12.50.. The hamburgers were good and we liked the fried vegetables and dipped them in the small paper ramekins of smoke flavored catsup and ranch dressing. I mentioned to the owner that it might be interesting to add a little harissa to the rather bland ranch dressing to zip up its blandness a bit. B2B is a upscale casual burger joint that makes its own hard ciders. We tried pear and apple and each ordered a liter of apple cider.
The food was a bit much for my stomach, so I drank a small glass of French apple cider when we returned home after the parade and dinner.
We went to bed around 10:00.
Bon Appetit
