2014 Lunch – Slate Street Cafe Dinner – BLT sandwiches and marinated asparagus
I rode at around 6:00 in the morning and saw the setting full moon and a hot air balloon.
Suzette had
to drive to Santa Rosa and return by 3:30 p.m. so we could attend Gruet
Winery’s 25th anniversary celebration for Bastille Day.
Josefo came
by and we went by the Candy store, but it was locked up, so we decided to go to
lunch. I picked Slate Street Café for
lunch. When we arrived around 11:30 a.m.
it was already fairly crowded and got a bit more crowded by noon.
Josefo
decided to get the house burger with Swiss cheese and avocado ($10.50). I ordered brown bag fish and chops
($12.00). Josefo does not drink so we
drank water. My fish and chips was very
disappointing. I was made with thin strips of salmon (probably less than three
ounces of fish) battered heavily probably with six ounces of batter and deep
fried served in a brown paper bag on a bed of house made potato chips, which
were quite nice. Josefo liked his
burger.
So on
balance I would say that the meal was just okay. Not inspiring.
Suzette
called around 3:30 and informed me that she had an emergency at the Santa Rosa
facility that would delay her. She did
not arrive until almost 7:00 and was tired from her day on the road, so we
decided to have a very simple meal of BLT with the PPI caprese salad and
marinated asparagus from last night’s meal.
I went to
the garden and picked a basket full of tender lettuce leaves and about seven or
eight strawberries.
We fried 4 strips of apple wood smoked bacon from Costco ($14.99 for four pounds) bacon and sliced the sage and sweet potato bread Max and Jane had brought us
from Sprouts on Sunday.
We ate a
simple meal while watching the Antiques Roadshow and Stage ten of the Tour de
France which was the best stage yet as Alberto Contador crashed out and Vicenzo
Nibali won the stage and went back into yellow for the Astana team.
Later in the
evening still suffering from my fish and chops, I ate a bowl of poached figs and
fresh Trader Joe’s European style yogurt and felt tons better.
Bon Appétit
