November 14, 2019. Lunch -Masonic Grand Lodge. Dinner – Mad Chef Brewery.

We had a few bites of sushi that Don had bought at the Giant Grocery store on $5.00 Tuesday special.  It was the typical grocery store style of sushi, but as a special breakfast treat, it was wonderful.  One-was spicy tuna and the other a less spicy fish.

At 10:30 we drove to the Masonic Home to visit Sara and eat lunch.  At noon we  went to the large dining room, which is the most elegant dining room I have ever been in and I have seen a lot of elegant dining rooms.  Here are some pictures.

There are three different menus in the fine dining area of one side of the dining room and buffet dining on the other side of the dining room.

The regular menu is served on boy and different eating areas sides but it is in a steam table on the buffet side and served by table service on the fine dining side. I ordered Caesar salad, tortellini with a beef and tomato sauce made with the Masonic Home’s beef raised on the property and sautéed zucchini and tomatoes from the regular menu There was a chef’s special menu which contained a Country fried steak and another special.  Then there was the Special menu which contained items that cost extra.  Suzette was intrigued by two items on that menu, an appetizer of clams Casino for $7.00 and a Braised Beef Shank with vegetables.p for $16.00.  Sara ordered a shrimp brochette, dilled boiled potatoes, and corn chowder from the regular menu.

The waiter said he was new when we assailed him with questions, but rather than try to answer them wrongly, he went to the kitchen and asked the chef to come to our table to explain the preparation of the dishes.  He said, “We make our own Casino butter with bell pepper, bacon, onion, etc.”  Having her questions answered, Suzette ordered the Clams Casino and the Beef Short Ribs.  When the clams were brought out there were ninety ten and the waiter stated, “Since there are three of you the chef made a few more so you can share.”  How often have you heard that in a restaurant?  The Casino butter had been drizzled over a fresh clam that had been filled with bread crumbs and baked for a couple of minutes.  The Braised Beef Shank was equally impressive. I have never seen a cut of meat like it.  The beef had been removed from the shank in a flat thin roulade and then reattached and braised with vegetables in a mushroom sauce, so that it could be unrolled and easily cut and eaten. It was very delicious.  I loved the mushroom wine sauce on the piece Suzette shared with me.

My dish of tortellini was more than adequate.  The tortellini was cooked well beyond al dente but the beef chunks that were just a bit larger than ground beef were terrific.  Don later told me the Masonic Beef is award winning at international contests.  I can believe it.

After we finished our entrees our waiter asked if we wanted dessert.  We said yes.  There were four items.  I could not make up my mind between pineapple upside down cake and Cracker pudding.  The waiter brought me both with a cup of hot tea.  The rule at Masonic seems to be you get whatever you want.  The service was excellent and the food quality was also.

After lunch I took a nap while Jean and Suzette talked to Sara and we left around 3:45 and drove back to Don and Bev’s house.

Bev suggested that we go to a beer pub and restaurant half way between Jean’s house and Don’s house on the edge of Lancaster, which we did after Don picked up Jeff, the oldest Lindemuth sibling at 5:30 Harrisburg airport. We took two cars.  When we arrived the joint was full.  We took a table and pulled up six chairs.  The menu was interesting. It was mostly appetizers and sandwiches with a couple of entrees, like fried chicken and a waffle. There were about 30 house made beers also. Food and beer was ordered at the bar, so there was no need to make sure folks did not walk the check. I ordered a grilled Caesar salad and Suzette ordered Pork Belly Korean BBQ tacos with a spicy Cole slaw served in a lightly toasted flour tortilla.  I loved the Caesar Salad it was a head of Romaine sliced in half long ways and lightly grilled with a handful of croutons on a plate dotted with halved cherry tomatoes and drizzled with the same type of Caesar dressing that had been used on the Caesar salad at the Masonic home, a thick creamy Caesar dressing. I loved it as well as the pork belly tacos.  We all ordered different beers. I ordered a porter, Suzette ordered a Pilsner, and zen ordered a caramel brown ale. Jean ordered nachos, Bev ordered a turkey sandwich, and Jeff ordered a Schnitzel sandwich.

Everyone liked their food and beer.  It was a good choice and Bev commented that she was amazed that such a large restaurant would be filled with folks on a Thursday night.

When we returned home Don served us glasses of golden rum made by his favorite rum distillery in a Florida, where he and Bev have wintered  during several of the last few years.  Here is a picture.

I count this as a great day of food and it is always pleasant to be among the Lindemuth family.

Bon Appetit
