October 1, 2018 Day 3 in Oslo. Lunch – Opera Hall, Brasserie Sanguine
We started a bit earlier today. We bussed to the Munch Museum, which was showing an exhibit curated by and showing the work of Marlene Dumas, a Dutch painter at around 9:30.
The exhibit space was a bit small, so there were not as many Munchs as would have wished, but many great ones, like a great self-portrait, Puberty, Melancholy, and several others.
I also saw great murals in the auditorium. After the Museum, we walked to the Toyen metro station and Metroed to Jaernbanne Torget and walked to the Opera Hall, which sits beside the fjord. I could not walk up the incline to the roof and was a little hungry, so we settled for lunch in the Brasserie Sanguine located in the opera’s spacious lobby that reminded me of the Wright dining room at the Guggenheim Museum in New York with its sweeping curved walls of architecturally sculpted wood.
I ordered fish soup and Suzette ordered an appetizer of potatoes au gratin with Racallete cheese and a small salad. Suzette drank a glass of Riesling and I drank an English apple cider. The potato dish did not have much racallette so it lacked flavor. The fish soup made me ill later. It was made with a very rich broth that had intense flavor, which should have been an indication that all was not well. I should have remembered the inedible bouillabaisse in Cap de Antibes and not eaten it. As it turned out by the time we returned to our hotel room I was in real distress and began having diarrhea that continued much of the night. Sort of a prolonged Essouerria experience. The lunch was not cheap at 668 Kroner after tip, which is about $80.00 for two appetizers and two beverages. I don’t know how average folks can afford to live in Norway.
After lunch we walked back to the Jearntorget Metro station and took the No. 1 line to the top of the fiord. We walked down to Frogernaseten, a beautiful restaurant overlooking the fiord. Here are some photos.
We split a beer and the walked back up the hill to the last metro stop and took it back down to National Theatre and walked past the palace to go back to our Hotel around 5:30 and called it a night. We went to bed around 7:30 because we had to leave for the airport at 4:30 in the morning for our return flight to Albuquerque.
Mal Appetit
