I rode from 7:15 until 8:00. Then watched news and World Cup soccer until 9:15, while Suzette went to the store and bought a gallon of apple cider vinegar and a gallon of milk. Suzette made a BLT Omelet with layers of Jarlsberg cheese, bacon, and tomato between egg and a layer of avocado slices on top. Here are pictures.
Then I watched World Cup until 3:00. Today there were two full limit games that went the full 120 minutes and penalty kicks, which Croatia and Russia won over Denmark and Spain. Almost every game has been riveting and unpredictable.
At 3:00 we drove to Marble brewery to hear the Higher Ground Bluegrass Band, which we liked and Suzette booked for an August 18 noontime concert at the Center. We ordered a hot dog and fries from the Urban Dog food truck parked beside Marble. Mi ordered a grilled bacon wrapped hot dog with blue cheese and sautéed mushrooms and ordered fries for Suzette. I drank an oatmeal stout and Suzette drank an amber ale. Then we split a Saison, a light bubbly French style beer.
We drove home a bit after 4:00. I rested for a few minutes and the showered and we started preparing dinner at 5:00.
I peeled and sliced a cucumber on a plate to which Suzette added slices of the freshly pickled beets.
I then sliced fullkorns bread and cracked A round of Swedish hard bread into pieces and sliced about 2/3 of a baguette into rounds, which we toasted.
Then we arranged the two pates and some slices of Jarlsberg cheese and Gravad Lax on another tray.
Finally I sliced and diced the remaining ½ cantaloupe into bite sized pieces for the salad while Suzette sautéed ½ head of red cabbage in olive oil and seasoned it with apple cider vinegar and sugar for her new salad.
Mellissa and Aaron arrived at 7:00 and Willy a few minutes later. Melissa brought the Brie we requested she bring and Aaron the two bottles of Le Dans rose.
We took the trays of food to the table in the garden under the gazebo that Suzette had set and began eating the appetizers. I poured the Le Dans rose, which everyone liked. Then in a few minutes I poured the St. Sagnol rose from Coteaux Varios Du Provence ($6.99 at Trader Joe’s) for the second glass. After about 45 minutes Suzette went back to the kitchen to assemble her new composed salad of pieces of prosciutto and cantaloupe on a bed of sautéed red cabbage garnished with chopped fresh mint and crumbles of fresh homemade mint infused cheese. The salads were lovely and the fresh mint infused cheese fabulous but the red cabbage was too sweet to the point that it overpowered the sweetness of the cantaloupe. Everyone else was blown away, but I had tasted the original creation several days ago, so only I was aware of the difference. Suzette thought the difference was the use of apple cider vinegar and she is correct if she did not use more sugar in the this rendition of the red cabbage.
After we cleared the salad plates, Willy and I brought out the Clafoutis and dessert plates and whipped cream and a bottle of Gruet Brut rose, which Willy opened and poured. Everyone enjoyed the Clafoutis, but we were stuffed by now and starting to get sleepy, since it was after 9:00.
We said goodnight at 9:30 after a lovely cold supper and lots of rose wine.
Bon Appetit
