February 16, 2020 Brunch – Gazebo Dinner – Poke, Seaweed Salad, and Hawaiian Avocado
We talked to Luke for about twenty minutes and Fareed Zacharia and then we drove north to Gazebo Restaurant located at the edge of the ocean. There was a long The menu was somewhat limited, egg dishes, pancakes, fried rice, and sandwiches. I ordered a daily special omelet with
Portuguese sausage, bell pepper, cheese, avocado, sour cream, and salsa.
Suzette ordered Eggs Benedict with Portuguese Sausage instead of the ham.
We enjoyed our breakfast an$ then drove north to a peninsula called the Dragon’s teeth.
We walked out to the peninsula past a burial site for an ancient king. The Dragon’s teeth were up turned sharpened rocks at the edge of the cliff face. It was a very impressive rock formation, not unlike the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland.
We then drove back to the hotel and walked the beach and rested until 5:30 when we drove to Foodland Supermarket to buy poke for dinner. We bought a double portion of tuna poke with brown rice, one with soy and the other with wasabi plus ½ lb. of seaweed salad and 1/3 lb. of pickled octopus. We also bought yogurt, a package of banana nut bread, two large beers, and a large Hawaiian avocado; all for $33.00.
We drove back to the hotel and moved the dining table out onto the balcony so we could watch the sun set as we ate our poke. We shared an Iciban beer and ate as much of the food as possible as we watched the sun paint the clouds a golden pink and the humpback whales breach and jump off shore from our balcony.
We then watched TV until 10:00. The PBS channel has the same schedule of shows as our NM PBS channel, so we were able to see the successive Staniton and Vienna Blood series episodes.
Poke is really just flavored Sashimi with the fish cubed by hourly employees instead of sliced by sushi masters. The fish is flavored in six or seven different ways. The fish offered include salmon, Marlin, octopus, and tuna. Also, the poke is made with both previously frozen fish and fresh fish. The fresh fish poke is about twice as expensive as the Previously Frozen fish poke.
We loved it and particularly loved the perfectly ripe avocado.
It was a pleasant dinner and a great introduction to poke.
Bon Appetit
