May 31, 2024 Breakfast - Bagel with Gravad Lax Lunch - Sandwiches on airplane. Dinner - Shangri La Restaurant, Detroit

May 31, 2024 Breakfast - Bagel with Gravad Lax Lunch - Sandwiches on airplane. Dinner - Shangri La Restaurant, Detroit

We got up early and got dressed and then I went into the kitchen and toasted three slices of bagel and spread cream cheese on them and garnished them with slices of red onion and Gravad lax. We each ate one slice and I wrapped the third slice.

I the toasted two slices of baguette and buttered them and then garnished them with Salami on one and pepperoni on the other plus slices of red onion, Jarlsberg cheese and wrapped them in Saran and stuffed some lettuce and green onions into a sandwich bag also.

I put these items in a larger gallon freezer bag with a milk chocolate bar.

At 8:00 we drove to the airport and flew first to Denver and then to Detroit.

Although our Albuquerque departure was delayed by1 1/2 hours,  we arrived in Denver with thirty minutes to catch our connecting flight to Detroit that was then delayed 1/2 hour.

We ate the sandwiches in route to Detroit, Suzette drank a glass of red wine and I drank a Wild Turkey Bourbon and coke.

In Detroit by the time we exited the Budget rental lot and drove downtown to the Detroit  Institute of Art, it was 8;20 and the Art Institute closed at 9:00 so we drove the two additional blocks to the Inn on Ferry street where we had a reservation and checked in.

By the time we checked in it was almost 9:00. We looked at several dining options and when  Suzette said she found a Dim Sun restaurant, I said that is where we

The eggplant stuffed with Fred fish

should go. The Shangri La Restaurant was only 1/2 mile from our Inn and we found a parking space across the street. Soon we were ordering dim sun. We ordered eggplant stuffed with fried fish, shrimp Kau wrapped in a gluttonous rice flour wrapper, steamed shrimp fun kor also n the gluten wrapper, steamed spare ribs in black bean sauce, and steamed BBQ buns. Suzette ordered a cold sake and I ordered hot tea. The tea was strong jasmine, so I ordered a pot of hot water to dilute the tea and a small bowl of chili oil and chop sticks.

My plate with 1/2 of a steamed BBQ bun and a piece of steamed spare rib

The steamed shrimp kau and steamed Spare Ribs

We loved our dim sun dinner and left a good tip on top of the $48,00 ticket.

We have never eaten steamed spare ribs in black bean sauce or eggplant stuffed with fried fish and we both loved them and the sauce they were served in.

As we left the restaurant we noticed a number of awards Shangri La had earned as the best Chinese restaurant in Detroit.

By 10:30 we were back in our room and getting ready to sleep except I stayed up to blog this entry.

We will return early on Tuesday to visit the Art Institute.

May 30, 2024 Lunch - Sonic hot dog at Book Club. Dinner - Roast Duck with Potatoes and Asparagus Au Gratin

May 30, 2024 Lunch - Sonic hot dog at Book Club. Dinner - Roast Duck with Potatoes and Asparagus Au Gratin

I got up at 6:30 and showered and dressed and ate two Pain au Chocolat with a cup of tea.

Then I moved the barricades and sand bags from my trunk.

Henry came around 8;00 to pick them up and a check.

I then checked the market and it was down big time, thanks to a sell off of over 25% of Salesforce and a smaller drop in price Meta and even Nvidia, so a very tough day.

At 10:30 I ate a snack of toasted slices of baguette spread with butter and thin slices of Humboldt Fog, which is an American version of Morbier consisting of two pours of milk curds with a layer of black ash in between.

Then at 10:50 I drove to Peter’s to pick him and our new book club member, Nicolai, up and drove to the Albuquerque Memorial Park near the corner of Louisiana and Gibson where our book club was scheduled to meet.

We discussed the book, 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur Clarke. One of the facts I learned was thar he wrote the book in the same time as he and Kubrick were writing the screenplay for the 2001 movie in 1967. That seems obvious when I finally read the book, because the plot lines of both are so similar.

Then we critiqued Keith’s newly published book, Corners of the Mind, about counter intuitive scientific thinking.

At 2:30 I drove Nicolai and Peter home on my way home.

When I returned home a discovered that the New York jury unanimously convicted Trump on all 34 felony counts in his falsification of documents case. The inevitable appeal of this conviction with be protracted and costly  and there is no assurance that Trump will not be put under some form of incarceration, like house arrest.  More importantly he may lose the election because of the independents and Haley voters who will not vote for a convicted felon or already think Trump is not Presidential material.

The other thing that on a day without a Trump conviction would be catastrophic was that my portfolio dropped in value by 1.5%.

It may be serendipity but in the morning today I made my first donation to Joe Biden.

When Suzette came home we watched the news and then decided we deserved a good meal. I wanted potatoes au gratin and we still had 1/2  bag of beautiful large asparagus, so Suzette suggested combining a layer of asparagus between two layers of thinly sliced potatoes.

I thinly cut four russet potatoes and sliced the asparaguses lengthwise to less tha 6 inches, so they fit crosswise in a 6 x 9 inch Pyrex baking dish and lay them on top of the bottom layer of potatoes. Suzette then found and made a recipe by Martha Stewart that sauced the dish with a Mornay sauce (a cheese enriched cream sauce). Suzette used Jarlsberg cheese that is similar in texture and taste to Swiss or Gruyere cheese.

The result was superb. Suzette created a fabulous new dish that we will make many times for dinner parties in the future when we have large tender asparagus.

I wanted duck, so Suzette fetched the package of two pre-cooked duck halves that I recently bought at Costco for $20.00 from the garage freezer and put one half in a Pyrex baking dish and when the potato dish was finished put the duck in the oven for fifteen minutes to re-heat and crisp the skin.

While the potatoes were cooking we carried three bottles to the wine cellar in the basement to cellar and after Suzette went back upstairs I rummaged around looking for a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape but found a bottle of 2009 Chilean Vina Paralillo Arenal Carmenere that looked interesting. I must have collected this bottle at least ten years ago when I was still scouring wine stores for interesting discounted wines. When I opened the bottle we discovered a dark complex heavy wine that tasted of cooked sweet berries to Suzette. I noticed the intense complexity that occurs in a long cellared good wine. To describe the wine in one word, “fabulous”.

We sipped the wine and watched Dallas go on a shooting spree against Minnesota in game five of their Western Conference play off and the continuing coverage of the Trump criminal trial. The conclusion most trial commenters had was either that Trump finally had to face the consequences of his actions in a court of law like every other American citizen or that regardless of what happens now, this was a historic event in American history, a former President being tried and convicted of election related felonies.

When the duck was roasted, I carved the wing, breast, leg and thigh into  slices and plated them equally and Suzette added squares of the potatoes and Asparagus au gratin and I poured glasses of the carmenere.

Almost immediately Suzette and I agreed that this was great meal defined by me as when a great meal is served with a great wine.

Tonight may have even been better than great. It may have been fabulous, when you are surprised by the quality of the wine and one or more creative elements of the food.

As Suzette stated, “It was a great meal to start our trip to Michigan.”

During the meal, Luke called and we talked to him for a while and discussed visiting him and Rebecca and Mickie in New York for my birthday on July 3. I will be 78 years of age.

May 29, 2024 Breakfast - Sausage and Eggs and toast Lunch - Chicken Salad Salad. Dinner - Lemon Penne with PPI Calabacitas, Mushrooms, and Pimiento

May 29, 2024 Breakfast - Sausage and Eggs and toast  Lunch - Chicken Salad Salad. Dinner - Lemon Penne with PPI Calabacitas, Mushrooms, and Pimiento

I woke up at 7:15 and soon discovered it would be a down Day in the market. I decided to sauté sausage patties and fry eggs. I also toasted two slices of baguette and spread them with butter and cherry reserves.

After breakfast I was tired and rested and napped until 1:00. I started to make a chicken salad salad with fresh lettuce from our garden, a hard boiled egg Diced, and a liberal helping of the lovely chicken salad Suzette made. I drizzled Spanish olive oil over the salad. Suzette came home at 1:45 as I was preparing my salad and heated 1/2 of a pita and filled it with chicken salad and we ate lunch together.

Today my portfolio suffered a minimal loss of .007% as the upward buying energy drained out of the market.?

After lunch around 2:30 I went by 524 Romero to check on progress and saw the planter wall had been fixed.

I then drove to the Library and picked up the three items I had reserved! One of which was Arthur Clarke’s Childhood’s End.

I then drove to Bill Turner’s office and reviewed a closing file and talked with Bill for a while.

When I returned home at 5:00 I rested for a few minutes and drank a glass of water.

Then at 5:30 I meditated and we had four people today which is a good number for our small group of five regulars.

Then we rested until 7:00 when we began discussing dinner. I wanted pasta and we both wanted to use up as many PPI’s and other ingredients as possible because we would be traveling this weekend.

Suzette suggested boiling the last of the lovely lemon flavored penne Mellisa gave us and  so I filled a large pot with water.

Suzette then decided to use the remaning pimiento, the two hard boiled eggs, a couple of medium portobello mushrooms diced, and a container of the Calabacitas with cubes of smoked pork and slices of hot dogs.

This made a lovely combination of flavors and ingredients that we both was a wonderful expression of our cooking with PPI’s.

While I diced the pimiento and the mushrooms, Suzette opened a bottle of Aquino Chianti Riserva (Trader Joe’s $5.99) and poured a glass to taste test it.  It was okay, so we drank it with our meal.

Suzette did not create a sauce for the dish but there was lots of flavor from the buttery Calabacitas and meats and mushrooms.

We watched Dallas fall to Edmonton to tie their western NHL series at 2 games each and then went bed at 9:30.

May 28, 2024 Lunch - Costco hot dog. Dinner - Sautéed Salmon filet with steamed Asparagus and Tartare s

May 28, 2024 Lunch - Costco hot dog. Dinner - Sautéed Salmon filet with steamed Asparagus and Tartare sauce

I awakened at 6:45 and watch about 30 minutes of TV. Long enough to see that it would be an up day in the market.

I then showered and dressed and talked to Henry and agreed to obtain a building permit for the sidewalk closure.

When I went to the City Building services office I told them we would start construction today and they agreed to give me an emergency permit if I agreed to place barricades at as an Felipe and Romero t divert pedestrians across the street, which I agreed to.

I called one of the three barricade vendors and was approved to lease two barricades after completing a credit card authorization.

I then went.to Costco and bought another pair of blue jeans that fit me, a combination four pack of two catsups, a relish, and a mustard, and six bottles of 2020 Smith Haut Lafitte for $32.00 per bottle. They had sold out of the 2018 for 30.00 per bottle. The chateau owner in an interview said the 2020 was a better vintage than the 2018.  In five years when we drink one we will find out.

I then ate a hot dog and drank two cups of Pepsi, which rejuvenated me.

I then drove to AWP and Signed the order form and picked up the two barricades and drove home.

After I unloaded I checked the market and was amazed that Nvidia had risen $74.32 and was going up in the after hours trading. Nvidia and ABNB helped push my portfolio by a near record 2.4%.

I was thrilled. But then I got busy and revised a contract and met with two clients.

I did not finish working at my desk until 5:45.

I made a mojito and ate some pita chips and watched the news and game 4 of the NBA Western final between.Dallas and Minnesota with Suzette until 7:00, when I watched Finding Your Roots until 8:00 a bd then turned it back to basketball. Minnesota won by five points to extend the series to a game 5. It is hard for me to believe Minnesota can win three more games when it lost the first three games.

At 9;30 I took out the trash and blogged and Suzette went to bed.

I read a bit more of Keith’ book about discovering the corners of the mind that deals with the critical reasoning process instead of relying on one’s gut to make decisions.

It has lots of great illustrations and haiku and I find it entertaining.

I went to bed at 10:30 for a change.
